Nerello Mascalese

The name Nerello Mascalese takes its name from Mascali, a plain on the eastern side of Etna. The farmers who first mentioned this grape around 1800, originated from that area. Today, through the use of ampelographic DNA testing we know that it could be the result of a natural crossing of Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco vines.
