November 17 ended the anxious wait. The editors of Wine Spectator, the most influential American magazine in the wine world, have published a list of the 100 best wines reviewed in 2014. The parameters used were: the quality of the wine, the availability of the bottles in the US market and a defined element the authors “excitement”, concept impossible to translate a single word, but who wants to express that touch of class and originality that can make a difference in a context so fierce and competitive. The ranking pays tribute to the best producers of the wine world and celebrate those geographic areas naturally destined to a winemaking excellence.
Santagostino Baglio Sorìa Red, historic label brand Firriato, this year had already given by Wine Spectator the extraordinary score of 91 points. A surprising result is that now its perfect culmination with the inclusion in the list just published. “Every day – says Federico Lombardo of Monte Jato, marketing manager Firriato – this icon wine of Sicily gives us great satisfaction. Enter the Top 100 Wine Spectator is a goal really exciting, to be shared with the entire company. This recognition is good for all of Sicily of quality wine and those who have chosen to lead the vineyards to organic regime. I do not believe in that list of 100 great wines of the world, there is another company that achieves this result, a practicing certified organic viticulture. This is an added value really important to us. A significant fact that makes us aware of the importance that this recognition involves – concludes Federico Lombardo Monte Jato -: we are the ambassadors of Sicilian wine in the world. “The Santagostino was the pioneer in combining the indigenous grapes with international varieties. This blend of Syrah and Nero d’Avola has represented for thousands of consumers – a very model of Sicilian wine, where the terroir reached a record total of expression and identity. And ‘This is the strength of our Santagostino red “.
A wine, harvest after harvest, has always found the approval of international judges more stringent, but also, and above all, the unconditional love of winelover most demanding, with its immediately recognizable style taste-olfactory amplitude of the fruit and elegance of the tannins.
Italy has collected a total of 19 placings, with Tuscany and Piedmont, which boast the largest number of companies awarded. Santagostino Red comes from the vineyards of the estate of Baglio Sorìa, in the heart of western Sicily, where the sea breeze touches the elegant geometry of the vineyard. Here, in the ’80s, began the great dream of the fashion house Firriato: the estate is nestled in one of the most authentic and fascinating corners of Sicily and the vineyards blend harmoniously in a breathtaking natural setting, bordering the natural reserve of the salt marshes of Trapani and Paceco. A unique terroir to climatic conditions, where does the Santagostino Rosso Firriato, one of the top 100 wines in the world according to Wine Spectator.
