Awarded DNV-GL certifications for Water Footprint

Trapani (Sicily) – Firriato confirms its commitment to enological excellence through scrupulous attention to the ecosystem. earning a certification by DNV – GL, one of the most prestigious environmental agencies in the world.

The ISO14046-1 Water Footprint Certification concerns sustainable water management. In the on-site survey, Firriato’s use of water resources in all phases of its production process was assessed.  Their process was deemed to be of an efficient and sustainable style without evidence of waste or excess. The ISO14046-1 Water Footprint is a step towards Firriato’s ten-year plan to develop a production system that respects the earth’s natural cycles by employing the optimal exploitation of renewable energy, representing a leading model for the operation of sustainable wineries.

About the Certifications:

The ISO 14046-1 Water Footprint Certification relates to an organization’s environmental water management practices.  The water footprint, or the amount of water used directly or indirectly, as well as the impact on water quality, is a growing global concern. This certification demonstrates a company’s commitment to this innovative water stewardship program. It measures and documents water usage, in addition to evaluating management systems and industry best processes and practices.

Firriato invests heavily in monitoring the use of water on its estates. Following an initial evaluation of water use, an improvement plan is established that is verified by the certifying body. Such improvements may include reduction of water usage, improvements of purification, and water re-entry into soil. Such an approach can lead to conservation of water, energy and electricity. As an example, a cellar tank must be sterilized at different times with near-boiling water, a process that involves several thousand hectoliters. Firriato reuses the same purified water at different times, reducing the amount of water and the energy required for heating it in this delicate sterilization process.
