“Our interest – explains Federico Lombardo di Monte Iato, COO of the company – is not only to guarantee the best possible expression of our wines, but to reach superb quality through a virtuous process that is attentive to environmental needs. The choices we have made over the years are a proof: from the nurturing of biodiversity through the Certified Organic cultivation system, up to the innovative eco-compatible recovery of the ancient seventeenth-century structures of Baglio Soria in Trapani and Cavanera on Mount Etna.”

About the Certifications:

The ISO 14046-1 Water Footprint Certification relates to an organization’s environmental water management practices.  The water footprint, or the amount of water used directly or indirectly, as well as the impact on water quality, is a growing global concern. This certification demonstrates a company’s commitment to this innovative water stewardship program. It measures and documents water usage, in addition to evaluating management systems and industry best processes and practices.

Firriato invests heavily in monitoring the use of water on its estates. Following an initial evaluation of water use, an improvement plan is established that is verified by the certifying body. Such improvements may include reduction of water usage, improvements of purification, and water re-entry into soil. Such an approach can lead to conservation of water, energy and electricity. As an example, a cellar tank must be sterilized at different times with near-boiling water, a process that involves several thousand hectoliters. Firriato reuses the same purified water at different times, reducing the amount of water and the energy required for heating it in this delicate sterilization process.
